What Your College/Apprenticeship SHOULD Have Taught You

As great as your college or apprenticeship may have been, the truth is that they probably didn’t fully prepare you to be a successful business owner in your craft.

Take it from me, I went to plumbing college for three full years and still felt unequipped to manage my own business despite all those years of studying.

To be quite honest, I had no idea what I was doing in the early days, and I’m sure many of you can relate to that, too.

I want to share what I’ve learned with you to set YOU up for success in your trades business, no matter the skill!

Why You Need Business Training to Start a Successful Business

Imagine going into someone’s house and working on their gas boiler or plumbing without qualifications; you would be called a cowboy!

You wouldn’t even dream of it, would you?

Well, many of you start businesses without going to Business College or Business University or having any business training, and the reality is that it comes back to bite you.

You’ve never experienced the trials and tribulations of owning a business, so jumping in blind is frankly reckless and irresponsible.

Trades colleges don’t necessarily train us to start our businesses. Instead, they just focus on helping us develop the specific skills we need for our job role. So, not knowing how to start your own business is not your fault. You’ve just never been taught!

Building a Successful Business Means Upgrading Yourself

When you’re a business owner, you take on many roles such as HR, recruiter, sales, accountant, tradesman, etc. You essentially do it all, so to start your own business, you must upgrade yourself first.

By upgrading yourself, you must gain knowledge and build strategies that really work, so your chances of success are much higher.

This was a hard reality for me to swallow when I first started. I was a regular plumber at the age of 22, and by the time I turned 25, I sold half of the company to billionaire Lord Sugar for £250,000. Before I knew it, I was 29 and running the largest independent boiler installation company in the U.K, winning national installer of the year.

To be at such a young age and achieve great things like this was essentially unheard of. I couldn’t have accomplished any of these things without upgrading myself and dedicating myself to learning everything I needed for success.

I Want to Teach YOU Everything I’ve Learned on My Successful Journey

I went through many unforeseen challenges and had to crawl out of various hardships along my journey, and I want to protect you from making those same mistakes.

While dodging mistakes, I also want to support you in replicating all the successes. So I’ve decided to create an online training program that supports plumbing and heating companies called the Seven Figure Boiler Installation Blueprint.

In this program, I’ll show you:

  • How to get the right boiler leads
  • How to close sales right during the survey appointment
  • How to stand out from competition in your area without competing on price!
  • How to hire the right people to work for you
  • What systems and processes you need in your back-office to scale smoothly and efficiently

This is a jam-packed program to set you up for success on your business journey, and that will help you achieve freedom with your plumbing and heating business.

And the best part is that it is entirely for FREE.

What skills do trades colleges and apprenticeships often miss for business success?

Trades colleges and apprenticeships focus on developing technical skills for your trade but rarely cover essential business skills. Many tradesmen leave education knowing how to do the job but not how to start, manage, or grow a business. Business knowledge such as sales, marketing, recruitment, and financial management is usually left out, leaving many unprepared for self-employment.

Why do tradesmen need business training before starting a company?

Starting a business without business training is like working on a boiler without qualifications. Business training equips you with the skills to manage finances, generate leads, close sales, hire the right staff, and create systems that support growth. Without this foundation, tradesmen often face costly mistakes and avoidable setbacks.

How can tradesmen ‘upgrade themselves’ for business growth?

Upgrading yourself means expanding beyond technical skills to learn sales, marketing, recruitment, and leadership. A trades business owner takes on multiple roles, from HR to accountant, so building business knowledge is crucial. This personal development increases your chances of scaling successfully and avoiding common pitfalls.

Can business skills really help a tradesman grow quickly?

Yes. Learning and applying the right business strategies can accelerate growth dramatically. For example, with the right approach to marketing, sales, and operations, it’s possible to go from being a sole trader to running a high-turnover company within a few years. This involves mastering lead generation, client conversion, and team building.

Who is the Seven Figure Boiler Installation Blueprint for?

This program is for UK tradesmen, particularly plumbing and heating professionals, who want to grow their business, increase profits, and achieve more freedom. It’s suitable for both start-ups and established companies looking to take their operations to the next level.
